Charity shops set to reopen in June – what does this mean for your charity?

Following the recent announcement that ‘non-essential’ shops can start reopening from 15 June, charities are now making plans to reopen their shops across the UK.

Charities have been badly affected by coronavirus and the lockdown measures, with some reporting millions of pounds lost as a result of closed shops. Lots of charities are keen to reopen, but rules around social distancing, health & safety and hygiene mean they may have to put new rules in place for donors, staff, volunteers and shoppers.

The Charity Retail Association (CRA) has created a ‘reopening pack’ for charity shops. It details considerations that they deem mandatory (highlighted in red), those they strongly recommended (highlighted in yellow) and those that they recommend you consider against your own requirements (highlighted in green).

Some considerations/changes include:

  • Layouts of the shops and how to access them will need to change
  • Regulating how many people can enter the shop at one time
  • Staggering hours for accepting donations
  • All new donations (clothing, books, items etc) will need to go into quarantine for a minimum of 72 hours
  • Donors will be directed to ‘donation points’, such as empty shops or warehouses
  • Considering how many volunteers and staff can work in the shop to run it successfully whilst maintaining social distancing
  • Putting up signage to ask customers with symptoms to not enter the shop
